Our Heritage
The Ministry of Transport was known as the Ministry of Communications when it was first set up in 16 April 1968 . Since then, it has had three name changes corresponding with an expansion in its roles and responsibilities.
16 April 1968
The Ministry was set up and was known as the Ministry of Communications.
2 January 1985
The Ministry changed its name to the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). It was responsible for the policy direction concerned with the provision of land, sea and air transport, as well as postal, telecommunications and telephone services. It also included under its wings the Information Service, which was started in 1980.
28 November 1990
The Information Service expanded its roles and responsibilities and it was decided that it should come under another ministry - the Ministry of Information and the Arts. The Ministry of Communications and Information was then renamed as the Ministry of Communications (MINCOM). It was responsible for policy direction concerned with the provision of land, sea and air transport, as well as telecommunications and postal services.
3 June 1999
MINCOM expanded and was renamed the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MCIT). With this expansion, MCIT took over the National Computer Board (NCB) from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Six months later, in December 1999, NCB and the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS) were merged to form a single statutory board, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). IDA remained under MCIT until November 2001.
23 November 2001
MCIT was renamed the Ministry of Transport (MOT). Its portfolio of Information Technology, Telecommunications and Postal Services was transferred to the Ministry of Information, Communications and The Arts (MITA).
1 July 2002
The Meterological Service department was transferred from MOT to the National Environment Agency (NEA), a statutory board under the Ministry of Environment.
