Regulations
Land transport matters in Singapore are regulated by the following Acts established by Parliament:
Land Transport Authority of Singapore Act
An Act to establish and incorporate the Land Transport Authority of Singapore, to provide for its functions and powers, and for matters connected therewith, such as staff and financial provisions, etc. This Act was first established on 1 Sep 1995.
Public Transport Council Act
An Act to provide for the establishment of the Public Transport Council to license bus services and approve bus, taxi and rapid transit system fares and for matters connected therewith. This Act was first established on 14 Aug 1987.
Rapid Transit Systems Act
An Act to provide for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of rapid transit systems, to transfer the functions, assets and liabilities of the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRTC) to the LTA of Singapore. This Act was first established on 1 Sep 1995.
Street Works Act
An Act relating to street works and matters connected therewith. This Act sets out Land Transport Authority's (LTA) role in the construction, improvement, management, maintenance and repair of public streets. It also gives LTA the right to enter land for inspection and survey or the construction of roads and streets, giving LTA the right to recover costs and expenses of such activities where necessary. This Act was first established on 1 Sep 1995.
Parking Places Act
An Act relating to parking places, which allows LTA to provide parking places where it deems necessary. It also allows LTA to make and change rules and regulations on charges related to the use and provision of parking places by LTA and private bodies. This Act was first established on 3 May 1974.
Road Traffic Act
An Act for the regulation of road traffic and the use of vehicles and the user of roads and for other purposes connected therewith. Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA, Traffic Police) and MOT (LTA) share the administration of this Act. This Act was first established on 1 Jan 1963.
Motor Vehicles (Third Party Risks and Compensation) Act
An Act to provide against third-party risks arising out of the use of motor vehicles and for the payment of compensation in respect of death or bodily injury arising out of the use of motor vehicles and for matters incidental thereto. This Act was first established on 5 Feb 1960.
