Publication of White Paper which sets out how the LTA intends to achieve its objectives and transport vision for Singapore
Opening of Woodlands Station. Integrated with Singapore’s first underground interchange, it allows commuters to make seamless transfers between transport modes
Opening of Tampines Expressway (TPE), which serves developments in the north-eastern part of Singapore

Opening of Seletar Expressway (SLE) to link Central Expressway (CTE) to Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE), and serves the northern part of Singapore
Launch of Expressway Monitoring Advisory System to monitor traffic on expressways and clear obstructions to ensure smooth traffic
The Area Licensing Scheme and RPS become automated with the launch of the Electronic Road Pricing system, the first of its kind in the world |

Opening of Singapore’s first Light Rapid Transit – Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT)

Launch of traffic.smart portal to allow motorists to view real-time traffic conditions online
2001

Switchover to EZ-link card for fare payment on the public transport system
Singapore’s first air-conditioned bus interchange opens at Toa Payoh
2003
Deregulation of taxi supply and entry of new taxi operators

Opening of North East Line (NEL), Asia’s first automated underground system
Opening of Sengkang LRT, the first LRT system that integrates the planning and development of a new town. Residents can make seamless transfers between bus and rail at this transport hub |
2005
Opening of the 10.3km 15-station Punggol LRT, which provides residents with quick access to the North East Line
Extension of Queensway to Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) and opening of dual two-lane vehicular underpass along Queensway
Implementation of ERP along the northbound Central Expressway (CTE) on weekdays during the evening peak period from 6.00pm to 8.00pm
Creation of an Orchard cordon independent from the rest of the Central Business District (CBD). ERP operating hours for the Orchard Road area are extended to 8.00pm on weekdays; and ERP on Saturdays is introduced, from noon to 8.00pm
2006
Introduction of the Wheelchair Accessible Buses (WAB) by SBS Transit
Introduction of new set of Quality of Service (QoS) standards for basic bus services by the Public Transport Council (PTC). [The PTC earlier established a comprehensive set of bus service standards and specifications to regulate the performance of the basic bus operators in 1994.]
Commencement of upgrading of road facilities within a 400-metre radius of MRT and LRT stations to enhance barrier-free accessibility by LTA
2007
Opening of the Fort Canning Tunnel
Extension of the full-day bus lane scheme to five locations in the CBD, namely Eu Tong Sen Street, Hill Street, Victoria Street, Bras Basah Road and Somerset Road
Approval by the Singapore Government for the building of the 40km Downtown Line, which is scheduled to complete by 2018
Approval by the Singapore Government for the construction of the 5km Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE), where there will be
a 3.5km long underground tunnel and a 1.5km long above-ground road structure
Introduction of a 6-month trial for both the Real-Time Bus Arrival Information panels and the Key Bus Services Map (around Orchard Road area)
Further tightening of the Quality of Service (Qos) standards for basic bus services by the Public Transport Council
Implementation of a 3-month trial on Electronic Bus Journey Planner by the LTA and Transit Link
Opening of Phase 1 of the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) - the section from ECP to PIE
Extension of morning ERP hours on the southbound CTE ERP gantry and installation of new gantries at the southbound BKE (between Diary Farm Road), northbound CTE (before exit to PIE) and the eastbound ECP (before Rochor Road exit and from Ophir Road slip road)
Appointment of an International Advisory Panel
(IAP) by the LTA, to advise them on their transport policies and strategies, and to help keep the LTA abreast of the latest global trends and developments in land transport.
