Milestones

For close to 200 years, Singapore has been an important global port. Singapore has consistently ranked among the world’s busiest ports, with continued strong growth expected and supported by constant enhancement of our port infrastructure. Our hub port status has also supported our development as an International Maritime Centre, together with various pro-business initiatives, world-class infrastructure and services, as well as a highly-skilled and efficient workforce.

1964

Creation of Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) to manage Singapore’s port and harbour activities

1972

Commencement of container operations at Tanjong Pagar, marking the introduction of container shipping to Southeast Asia

1996

Formation of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on 2 February 1996

Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) is the world’s 10th largest merchant fleet

1997

MPA issues its first public licence to PSA Corporation Ltd

First berths open at PSA’s new Pasir Panjang Terminal

Implementation of Singapore Standard: Code of Practice for Bunkering by Bunker Barges/Tankers (SS CP60:1996), the world’s first national standard for bunkering

1998

Signing of MOU with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on Third Country Training Programme (TCTP) to assist developing countries

Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia jointly introduce a mandatory ship reporting system for the Malacca and Singapore Straits , known as STRAITREP

1999

MPA launches MARINET, its first internet-based system for shipping transactions

2000

Establishment of Singapore Maritime Academy, taking over from MPA’s National Maritime Academy and Singapore Polytechnic

2001

Second public license for port services and facilities issued to Jurong Port Pte Ltd

MPA and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) set up the Maritime Research Centre

2002

Establishment of S$80m Maritime Cluster Fund to promote and strengthen Singapore’s maritime sector

Maritime Research and Development (R&D) Advisory Panel formed to advise MPA in formulating a maritime R&D strategic plan for Singapore

2003 

MPA appointed to spearhead development of Singapore as an International Maritime Centre (IMC)

Establishment of S$100m Maritime Innovation & Technology (MINT) Fund

2004

Singapore achieves its first billion gross tons mark for vessel arrivals

MPA and NTU launch Singapore 's first local maritime degree programmes

2005

Launch of Harbour Craft Transponder System (HARTS) to enhance security

2006

Introduction of Maritime Finance Incentive (MFI) scheme to encourage ship financing activities

Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) becomes world’s 4th largest merchant fleet
