Milestones
For close to 200 years, Singapore has been an important global port. Singapore has consistently ranked among the world’s busiest ports, with continued strong growth expected and supported by constant enhancement of our port infrastructure. Our hub port status has also supported our development as an International Maritime Centre, together with various pro-business initiatives, world-class infrastructure and services, as well as a highly-skilled and efficient workforce.
1964
Creation of Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) to manage Singapore’s port and harbour activities
1972
Commencement of container operations at Tanjong Pagar, marking the introduction of container shipping to Southeast Asia
1996
Formation of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on 2 February 1996
Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) is the world’s 10th largest merchant fleet
1997

First berths open at PSA’s new Pasir Panjang Terminal
Implementation of Singapore Standard: Code of Practice for Bunkering by Bunker Barges/Tankers (SS CP60:1996), the world’s first national standard for bunkering |

Signing of MOU with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on Third Country Training Programme (TCTP) to assist developing countries
Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia jointly introduce a mandatory ship reporting system for the Malacca and Singapore Straits , known as STRAITREP
1999
MPA launches MARINET, its first internet-based system for shipping transactions

Establishment of Singapore Maritime Academy, taking over from MPA’s National Maritime Academy and Singapore Polytechnic
2001
Second public license for port services and facilities issued to Jurong Port Pte Ltd |
