Day of the Seafarer Ceremony

25 Jun 2015

Day of the Seafarer

25 June 2015 - Today, 25 June, is the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) annual International Day of the Seafarer. It recognises and celebrates the contributions of the 1.5 million seafarers worldwide. In celebration of this special day, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Singapore Maritime Officers' Union (SMOU) and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS), jointly distributed 600 gift hampers to ships that call at Singapore.

During the hamper distribution ceremony held today at the Sembmarine Integrated Yard @ Tuas, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Transport, presented gift hampers to representatives from the shipping industry. To promote continuous learning amongst young officers and seafarers, Assoc Prof Faishal presented book prizes to top cadets from the various Certificate of Competency courses for their outstanding academic performance.
This year, IMO is promoting a #CareerAtSea. IMO encourages seafarers to share their experiences of life working at sea via social media with the hashtag #CareerAtSea and posting pictures of their career at sea on the IMO’s photo wall.
