Singapore Hosts 17th APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting

        Singapore will be hosting the 17th APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting (APEC TPT-WG) from 27 - 31 March 2000. The meeting will bring together 250 senior transport officials from the twenty-one APEC economies.

        The APEC TPT-WG provides a forum for APEC officials to explore and discuss possible co-operation in the area of civil aviation, maritime and land transportation. Its aim is to foster economic development in the Asia-Pacific region through recommendations to increase the efficiency of the regional transportation system. The APEC TPT-WG meets twice yearly and the last meeting was held in Hong Kong in November 1999.

        Delegates to the 17th APEC TPT-WG in Singapore will be engaged in the various working group discussions which address 3 priority areas, namely More Competitive Transportation Industry; Safe and Environmentally Friendly Transportation Systems; and Human Resources Development.

        Delegates will also visit the SingaPort exhibition on Friday, 31 March. SingaPort is Asia's dedicated maritime exhibition and conference which will be held at the Singapore Expo from 29-31 March 2000. They will be able to get first-hand insight on some of the latest IT technologies and services in the maritime arena.

        A Singapore delegation, comprising senior officials from MCIT, CAAS, MPA, LTA and TDB, will participate in the 17th APEC TPT-WG.
