Ms Joan Pereira asked the Minister for Transport whether the Ministry will consider
i. banning vehicles turning right simultaneously as pedestrians cross the roads at junctions and
ii. programming junction signals such that vehicles will only be signalled to turn after the red-man signal has turned on.
Reply by Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan:
1. When the green-man signal is on, turning vehicles must always give way to pedestrians crossing the road. To disallow vehicles from turning when the green-man signal is on but there are no pedestrians crossing may hamper traffic flow unnecessarily.
2. Nevertheless, to further enhance pedestrians' safety, LTA has adjusted traffic light timings to give pedestrians a head start in crossing the road, and installed lighted road studs and additional road markings and signs at higher risk junctions to remind motorists to give way.
