Accelerating Replacement of Tactile Tiles at Pedestrian Crossings, and Extending Project to HDB and Residential Estates

Written Reply to Parliamentary Question

Dr Neo Kok Beng asked the Minister for Transport on the replacement of tactile tiles at pedestrian crossings

a.            whether the replacements can be accelerated to be completed within two years, instead of the planned four-year timeline; and

b.            whether the Government would consider extending replacement works to HDB and residential estates.

Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow:

1.            All tactile tiles at pedestrian crossings as well as in HDB and private residential estates comply with BCA’s Code on Accessibility in the Built Environment to ensure that they are safe to walk on.

2.            As part of the Land and Transport Authority's (LTA’s) maintenance programme, LTA is progressively upgrading tactile tiles at pedestrian crossings over a four-year period, as these tiles are directly exposed to rain and weather conditions. This will improve durability and skid resistance. LTA will prioritise areas with high footfall where feasible.

3.            LTA’s programme does not apply to residential estates, which are mostly maintained by HDB or the respective town council. The tactile tiles in these areas are mostly under shelter, such as drop-off porches and staircase landings, which are not subject to the same level of exposure and wear.
