Mr Foo Cexiang asked the Acting Minister for Transport with reference to recent reports that more car buyers intend to purchase or return to internal combustion engine vehicles over electric vehicles, how does the Ministry plan to address concerns such as public-charger quality, charging interoperability and being risk-averse to other advanced technologies, to ensure that Singapore remains on track for The Green Plan.
Reply by Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow:
1. Demand for electric cars remains strong. Of all cars registered in 2025, 45% are electric, 40% are hybrids, and the remaining 15% are internal combustion engine cars. As we ramp up our charging infrastructure to support growing EV adoption, we will also need to keep up with the latest in charging technology. First, we constantly review our regulations and the national charging standard to ensure relevance. Second, we have licensing requirements for operators of public chargers to fulfil, such as maintaining a minimum service uptime of 90%. Third, we also work with the industry to trial new technologies through regulatory sandboxes.
