Citizenship Demographics of Hired Bus Captains and Drivers from 2015 to 2024

Written Reply to Parliamentary Question 

Mr Pritam Singh asked the Acting Minister for Transport for each year from 2015 to 2024, how many bus captains and drivers across the public transport sector are (i) Singaporeans (ii) Permanent Residents and (iii) foreigners, respectively.

Reply by Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow: 

1.     The total number of bus captains has increased by about 9%, from around 8,900 in 2015 to around 9,700 in 2024. The nationality breakdown of bus captains has remained largely stable throughout this period, with the exception of the COVID-19 pandemic which saw a dip in the proportion of foreign bus captains. As of December 2024, around 28%, 15% and 57% of our bus captains are Singaporeans, Permanent Residents and foreign work pass holders respectively.
