Written Reply to Parliamentary Question
Ms Yeo Wan Ling asked the Minister for Transport
a. whether LTA tracks accidents involving fixed-gear bicycles, including the age profiles of these riders;
b. whether there has been an increase in the use of such bicycles among youths; and
c. whether the current requirement for at least one functioning handbrake remains adequate for fixed-gear bicycles or having additional safety requirements should be considered.
Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow
1. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) does not track accidents involving fixed-gear bicycles, nor the specific demographics that use fixed-gear bicycles.
2. Since implementing the requirement for all bicycles ridden on public paths and roads to have at least one functioning handbrake from 1 September 2021, LTA has not observed additional safety concerns. The current requirement remains adequate.
3. Fixed-gear bicycles found to be non-compliant and used on public paths have declined since 2024. LTA will continue to work with relevant agencies to enforce this requirement.
