Mr Lee Hong Chuang asked the Minister for Transport
a. whether the Ministry has assessed the effectiveness of blind-spot detection and monitoring systems in reducing vehicle collisions;
b. whether LTA sees merit in mandating such systems in newly-registered vehicles to enhance road safety; and
c. if so, whether the Ministry will consider incentives or support to encourage existing vehicle owners to retrofit vehicles with these systems.
Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow
1. Only buses and heavy goods vehicles with a Maximum Laden Weight above 8,000kg and 12,000kg respectively are required to be equipped with devices to observe blind spots as these vehicles have larger blind spot areas. Examples of such devices are blind-spot mirrors and/or camera monitoring systems. We have no plans to mandate this for other vehicle types or to offer incentives to retrofit vehicles with such devices at this point, although we encourage owners of vehicles to install these devices in accordance with recommendations from the manufacturer.
2. The Land Transport Authority will continue to monitor new vehicle technologies, including blind-spot detection devices, and their efficacy in enhancing road safety.
