No Abnormalities Found in Investigations into Mercedes-Benz Citaro Bus Incidents

Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong asked the Minister for Transport

a.           whether LTA has investigated the root causes of the incidents of bus fires involving Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses in 2026;

b.           whether additional safety protocols and mechanical audits are being implemented across older public transport fleet assets to ensure passenger safety; and

c.           if so, what are they.

Reply by Senior Minister of State for Transport, Mr Murali Pillai

1.           Based on investigations, the fire incidents involving Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses in the first half of 2026 were caused by failures of different parts. There is no indication of a common underlying cause. The parts involved were also within their manufacturer-recommended useful life. No one was injured in the incidents.

2.           As a precaution, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) directed our public bus operators to carry out additional inspections of their Citaro buses. No abnormalities were found.

3.           LTA is working with the bus operators to enhance the bus inspection regime for older buses and assess whether additional preventive measures can reduce fire risk.
