Dr Lim Wee Kiak asked the Minister for Transport
a. what are the statistics on bicycle ownership in Singapore;
b. how many people use bicycles as part of their daily commute;
c. whether the drive towards the Walk Cycle Ride SG vision is on target; and
d. whether the rise of PMDs is undermining this vision.
Reply by Senior Minister of State for Transport Dr Lam Pin Min:
1. Based on LTA’s 2017 Household Interview Travel Survey, about a quarter of households own bicycles and about 125,000 people use them for their daily commute.
2. Our Walk Cycle Ride aspiration is for Singaporeans to choose to walk, cycle and ride public transport, instead of driving. We have set a target of 75% of peak hour trips to be on public transport by 2030. The mode share of public transport has risen from 64% in 2013 to 67% last year. We expect it to rise further as more rail lines are launched. The increasing use of PMDs as a first and last-mile mode of travel has contributed towards this vision too.
