Mr Edward Chia Bing Hui asked the Minister for Transport
a. whether LTA has studied the use of acoustic cameras, as deployed in jurisdictions such as France, to identify vehicles with illegally modified engines or exhaust systems; and
b. whether LTA will consider pilot trials in residential neighbourhoods with persistent vehicle noise complaints to strengthen enforcement and reduce disamenities to residents.
Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow
1. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) conducted a one-week trial of cameras equipped with acoustic sensors last year at West Coast and Bukit Panjang. The cameras tested had limited accuracy in identifying vehicles with illegally modified engines or exhaust systems. Of the close to 80 vehicles identified, only one was found to be illegally modified.
2. LTA will continue to study the use of new technologies to enforce against illegally modified vehicles more effectively.
