Public transport fare concessions for caregivers accompanying commuters with disabilities

Written Reply to Parliamentary Question

Dr Charlene Chen asked the Minister for Transport whether the Public Transport Council will consider introducing a companion concession or other fare arrangements for caregivers accompanying commuters who are unable to travel independently because of disability issues.

Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow:

1.           The Public Transport Council (PTC) currently has no plans to introduce a companion or caregiver concession scheme. Caregivers who are heavy users of public transport can purchase monthly passes to help manage their public transport expenditure. Caregivers from lower income households also benefit from other schemes such as Public Transport Vouchers when transport fares are adjusted.

2.           The Government also provides support under the Home Caregiving Grant to individuals with permanent moderate disability living in the community. This grant provides cash payouts of up to $600 per month, which can be used to defray the cost of care, including transport expenses for caregivers.
