Siting of Cross Island Line's Loyang MRT Station Away from High-Density Residential Areas

Written Reply to Parliamentary Question

Ms Valerie Lee asked the Acting Minister for Transport

a.          what were the planning factors that led to the Loyang Cross Island Line (CRL) MRT station being sited away from the high-density residential areas of the Flora, Toh and Mariam estates; and

b.          whether the Ministry will explore additional entrances or improved pedestrian, cycling or feeder-bus links to better connect these estates to the MRT station.

Reply by Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow:

1.          The primary consideration in siting a new MRT station is to maximise the number of commuters who can be served by the MRT station in the mid to longer term. The location of the Cross Island Line CR3 station, which has a working name “Loyang Station”, was determined based on existing and future land use plans. Other factors such as availability of space and engineering feasibility are also considered in deciding station locations, to minimise the amount of land that needs to be acquired, thus minimising negative externalities to existing residents.

2.          With the opening of the station, First and Last-Mile connectivity will also be enhanced to improve access to the new CR3 station for residents in Flora, Toh and Mariam estates. This could include possible improvements to the covered linkways and cycling path network, as well as possible adjustments to bus services to improve connections to MRT stations, including the upcoming CR4 station that will also be in the vicinity of these estates.
