Mr Edward Chia Bing Hui asked the Minister for Transport
a. what proportion of lower-income households spend more than (i) 5% and (ii) 10% respectively of their monthly household income on public transport; and
b. how have these figures changed over the past three years.
Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow
1. Based on the latest Household Expenditure Survey (HES) conducted by the Department of Statistics (DOS) in 2023, fewer than one in 20 lower-income resident households surveyed spent more than 5% of their monthly household income on public transport.
2. The Public Transport Council (PTC) also monitors public transport affordability based on the average household spending on public transport across different income deciles. For lower-income resident households, the proportion of household income spent on public transport has remained at 2.4% over the past three years.
