Update on Investigations into Fatal Segar LRT Station Accident

Mr Edward Chia Bing Hui asked the Minister for Transport

a.          what is the status of investigations into the fatal accident at Segar LRT station;

b.           when the findings are expected to be shared with the family and the public; and

c.           whether LTA has completed its assessment of rope barrier systems or other physical barrier solutions at LRT platforms to improve commuter safety.

1.          The investigation into the fatal incident at Segar LRT station on 18 May 2026 is still ongoing. I seek the Member’s understanding that time is required for the investigations to be conducted thoroughly, to provide proper closure for the family and to ensure that the right safety improvements can be made.

2.          We are continuing to look for solutions that can further strengthen safety at our LRT platforms. The Land Transport Authority and the public transport operators are still studying available solutions for physical barriers at LRT platforms, including manually operated platform screen doors that do not need to be synchronised with trains doors. We will need time to carefully evaluate and trial any potential solutions. We have to ensure that they are safe, effective and suitable for the LRT operating environment, and do not inadvertently create new risks for commuters.
