a. what options, including Bus Rapid Transit and rail, are being assessed;
b. what criteria will determine which option is selected; and
c. what is the intended use of the existing Gul Circle MRT station platforms and tracks.
Reply by Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow
1. We are focusing our study of public transport options for Tuas South on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems because they are potentially more economical, flexible, and faster to implement than rail, while providing better capacity than regular bus services.
2. The feasibility study for BRT systems will look at projected public transport ridership, land and infrastructure requirements, and its impact on existing traffic. As part of the study, we will look at different vehicle types to determine the optimal system design.
3. The two additional platforms at Gul Circle MRT station can be used to extend the East-West Line should there be a need in the future.
