Mr Yee Chia Hsing asked the Minister for Transport whether auto-deduction of toll charges at the Causeway/Tuas checkpoints can be implemented in place of the current system which requires manual insertion of a cash card.
Reply by Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan:
1. To enable automatic deduction of tolls for Singapore vehicles at the land checkpoints today, we will need to install substantial physical infrastructure similar to what is used for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) or car park charging. However, we will be replacing the existing ERP system, which is becoming obsolete, by 2020, with a next-generation system that is based on satellite navigation technology and does not require physical gantries. We can then provide for automatic deduction with much less investment in physical infrastructure.
