Mr Lim Biow Chuan asked the Minister for Transport
a. whether there are any plans to manage the large number of heavy vehicles travelling along Fort Road; and
b. what are the measures to improve safety for other road users on this road.
Reply by Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan:
1. Most of the heavy vehicles plying along Fort Road are going to and from the construction sites for the Thomson East-Coast Line and the Marina East Staging Ground, where excavated materials are transferred to barges for reuse or disposal at offshore sites.
2. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) works closely with the developers and contractors to develop localised traffic control plans to improve safety and minimise inconvenience to other road users. These plans include managing the time and route of the heavy vehicles to avoid peak hour traffic and residential areas where possible. There are signs to alert motorists to slow down and watch out for heavy vehicles. There is regular monitoring to ensure that heavy vehicles adhere to the control plans. In addition, LTA has also installed surveillance cameras at Fort Road to monitor the traffic situation, and deploys enforcement officers when necessary.
3. LTA will continue to engage the residents, grassroots leaders and community advisors in the area to gather feedback and apprise them on the traffic situation.
