Written Reply by Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan to Parliamentary Question on Review of Speed Limit on Non-Expressway Roads

Mr Sitoh Yih Pin asked the Minister for Transport
a. whether LTA has considered reducing the speed limit for non-expressway roads to improve road safety in light of LTA's push for the use of bicycles, e-bicycles and personal mobility devices on our streets and roads; and
b. if not, what are the considerations that LTA takes into account for not doing so.
Reply by Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan:
1. Road speed limits are set to ensure that motorists can travel safely and efficiently. When setting the speed limit of roads, LTA generally considers factors such as road geometry and the level of pedestrian activities. Locations with higher pedestrian activities (e.g. School Zones and Silver Zones) have reduced speed limits of 40 km/hour.
2. Apart from infrastructure, user behaviour is critical for ensuring safety. We urge all users to play their part by exercising caution and consideration when using our roads and paths.
