Written Reply by Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung to Parliamentary Question on Investigation into 25 February 2021 Incident of Person Killed on MRT Track near Kallang Station

Mr Melvin Yong Yik Chye asked the Minister for Transport 

a.     what are the circumstances behind the 25 February 2021 incident where a person was purportedly killed on the MRT track near Kallang station; 

b.     what safeguards are in place to prevent unauthorised track incursions particularly during train service hours; and 

c.     whether these measures are adequate in light of this incident.

Reply by Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung:

1.     As investigations are ongoing, it is premature to conclude how the person intruded onto the track and whether safeguards are adequate. But in the course of investigations, it was discovered that the barbed wire at the top of the high fencing, near where the deceased was found, was compressed. It has since been repaired.

2.     There are multiple measures in place to deter entry into track areas throughout our MRT network. Within the stations, we have installed platform screen doors and CCTVs, and have regular security patrols. Outside the stations, high fences with barbed wires or razor mesh at the top are also installed at areas along at-grade tracks, viaducts and tunnel portals to deter intruders.

3.     The Public Transport Security Committee, which comprises Government agencies and the public transport operators, will review the current security measures.
