Ms Hany Soh asked the Minister for Transport
a. how many pedestrian overhead bridges are there in Singapore and how many have lifts installed to provide barrier-free access; and
b. whether there are plans to install more lifts for pedestrian overhead bridges, especially at mature estates like Woodgrove.
Reply by Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung:
1. Currently, there are about 580 pedestrian overhead bridges (POBs) in Singapore. To provide barrier free accessibility for the elderly and less ambulant commuters, ramps have been provided at 71 POBs and lifts installed at 48 POBs.
2. LTA is presently making plans to progressively install lifts at around 50 more POBs. Given the high cost of installing lifts, LTA will give priority to POBs at locations that would benefit large numbers of seniors and commuters with mobility challenges, barring site constraints. Particularly attention will be given to those near public transport nodes and healthcare institutions without nearby at-grade and other barrier-free crossings. We will continue to study how we can improve barrier-free access, including in estates such as Woodgrove.
