Mr Gan Thiam Poh asked the Minister for Transport whether the Ministry will consider extending the Cross Island Line Punggol Extension, which will connect Pasir Ris to Punggol, to Seletar Airport, Seletar private estate and Fernvale.
Reply by Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung:
1. MRT lines are built based on projected travel demand, given that these are very significant publicly funded investments. There are currently no plans to extend the Cross Island Line further to Seletar Airport, Seletar private estate and Fernvale based on projected travel demand.
2. Notwithstanding, commuters have access to the MRT network, through various bus and LRT services. These include bus Services 50 and 102 connecting to Sengkang MRT station on the North East Line, bus Services 70 and 86 connecting to Yio Chu Kang MRT station on the North South Line, and Sengkang LRT connecting to the North East Line.
3. In addition, the opening of the Cross Island Line Phase 1 and Cross Island Line Punggol Extension will add 15 new MRT stations or interchanges to the eastern and north-eastern parts of Singapore, including stations such as Tavistock and Serangoon North which can serve Seletar private estate residents. I have asked LTA to review the connections from Fernvale and Seletar to these stations so that residents can benefit from these stations when they open and enjoy better connectivity to more parts of Singapore.
