Mr Leong Mun Wai asked the Minister for Transport
a. what is the change in the size of the taxi fleet from 2010 to 2020; and
b. whether point-to-point service operators should provide a booking hotline for residents who are unable or do not know how to use the smartphone booking applications.
Reply by Minister for Transport S Iswaran:
1. The taxi population has decreased from about 26,100 taxis in 2010 to about 15,700 taxis in 2020.
2. After transiting to the new regulatory regime for the point-to-point transport sector in 2020, we have continued to require street-hail operators to provide a call booking service. This is to ensure that point-to-point services remain accessible to commuters who need to rely on such services. Today, there are about 10,000 trips per day booked by call booking services.
