Mr Edward Chia Bing Hui asked the Minister for Transport
a. what is the estimated utilisation rates of unsheltered bicycle parking racks at or near transport facilities;
b. whether the Ministry will consider building shelters for existing bicycle parking facilities to increase usage by commuters.
Reply by Minister for Transport S Iswaran:
1. The average utilisation rate of the approximately 27,000 bicycle parking lots at key transport nodes was around 60% last year. For unsheltered lots, the utilisation rate is around 55%. These bicycle parking lots can be found at MRT and LRT stations, bus interchanges and Integrated Transport Hubs. They are provided free-of-charge to support active mobility and first-mile-last-mile connectivity.
2. Where there is space available, it would be more cost-effective to construct them under existing covers and structures at the transport facilities.
