Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Data on Policies Support for Transition from Petrol to Electric Motorcycles in Singapore

Mr Louis Ng Kok Kwang asked the Minister for Transport 

a.     as of January 2025, what is (i) the number of registered electric motorcycles in Singapore and (ii) the percentage of all registered motorcycles that are electric; and

b.     what plans does the Ministry have to support the transition from petrol to electric motorcycles.

Reply by Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat:

1.     As of January 2025, there are 313 electric motorcycles registered in Singapore, comprising 0.2% of the total motorcycle population.

2.     Electric motorcycles with fixed batteries can charge at registered electric vehicle charging points deployed across Singapore, including Housing and Development Board carparks. We do not allow direct charging from wall sockets without any intermediary power management unit as this increases the risk of fires.

3.     The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is working with the industry to facilitate safe modes of charging electric motorcycle models with detachable batteries, including Battery Charge and Swap Stations (BCSS) and controlled off-board charging environments. To date, LTA has facilitated the entry of two players in Singapore offering BCSS for electric motorcycles. The Ministry of Transport/LTA will continue to work with the industry to explore charging solutions that meet our local needs, with safety being a key consideration.
