Mr Don Wee asked the Minister for Transport in view of international research findings showing that dark-coloured cars are at higher risks of getting into accidents
a. whether this is so in Singapore; and
b. if so, whether the Government will consider introducing measures such as imposing higher taxes to reduce the number of dark-coloured cars in Singapore.
Reply by Minister for Transport S Iswaran:
1. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) assesses vehicle safety using internationally recognised vehicle safety standards. Currently, there are no safety standards involving the colour of the vehicle, as it is not common international practice to assess vehicle safety by colour. As such, there are no strong grounds for LTA to introduce measures to reduce the number of dark-coloured vehicles.
