Mr Leong Mun Wai asked the Minister for Transport
a. what are the mitigation measures that have been put in place to reduce the noise from railway track maintenance at night; and
b. how do these measures compare with best practices overseas.
Reply by Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat:
1. Track maintenance is essential for the safety and reliability of our rail system. It can only take place between 1.30am to 4.30am when trains are not running.
2. Over the years, rail operators have improved track design and adopted new equipment and tools to reduce noise from track maintenance. Where noisy works are required for above ground tracks, residents in the vicinity are informed in advance. These are similar to best practices carried out overseas.
