Written Reply to Parliamentary Questions on Data on Traffic Accidents on Expressways and Impact on Motorists and Commuters

Mr Liang Eng Hwa asked the Minister for Transport
a. in the last five years, what is the number of traffic accidents that have occurred on the Bukit Timah Expressway, Pan Island Expressway and Kranji Expressway;
b. how much traffic congestion and time delays have the accidents on these expressways caused to motorists and commuters; and
c. how soon did the Expressway Monitoring Advisory System Vehicle Recovery Service respond to the accidents.
Reply by Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat:
1. Over the past five years, there had been an annual average of 558, 165 and 78 traffic accidents with injuries and/or deaths, along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) and Kranji Expressway (KJE) respectively.
2. The impact on congestion and time delay depends on multiple factors, including the timing of the accident, severity of the accident, weather condition, and number of vehicles involved. The majority of congestions caused by accidents lead to time delays of 15 minutes or less.
3. On average, the Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) vehicle recovery service will arrive at the accident site within 15 minutes.
