Maritime Safety & Security

Navigational safety is especially important for a busy port like Singapore. About two to three ships arrive at or leave our waters every minute, and there are about 1,000 vessels in the port at any one time.

We have therefore invested heavily in sophisticated systems, including our Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) to monitor every vessel movement in our waters.

We work closely with our neighbours, major user States and the shipping industry through regional platforms such as the Co-operative Mechanism on Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

We are also a Contracting Party to the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP). The ReCAAP information sharing centre has been set up in Singapore to facilitate communication, conduct analysis, and support capacity-building efforts towards this end.
